Google gates Gemini 4 Carbon, with token prices set to double

Teams evaluating Gemini 4 Carbon need to plan around two unknowns: when access actually opens beyond Fairwind, and when the introductory token rates expire. Budgeting from launch pricing alone could understate production costs.

Google gates Gemini 4 Carbon, with token prices set to double

Google announced Gemini 4 Carbon on October 28, positioning it as a frontier model for long-horizon coding and cybersecurity, but the rollout is narrow at launch.

Per the Google announcement, access starts this week for a limited group of cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program. Google says developer, business, and consumer access will expand later, but it has not given a public date for that wider release.

Pricing also comes with a built-in step-up. Google lists introductory rates at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, then says those prices move to $4 and $20 after the intro period ends. The company has not said when that cutoff happens.

For builders, this looks more like a watchlist launch than an immediately deployable model release. Teams interested in Carbon will need to wait for real API access, then size pilots against the post-intro rates rather than assuming the opening prices will hold.
