Moonshot AI launches Kimi K3.1 Pro, gates API access behind $1

Automation teams get a new long-context API model to evaluate, but access starts behind a small pay gate and the headline benchmark claims are still vendor-reported.

Moonshot AI launches Kimi K3.1 Pro, gates API access behind $1

Moonshot AI announced Kimi K3.1 Pro on October 23, 2026, making the model available on Kimi.ai, Kimi Work, Kimi Code, and through the Kimi API, while enterprise access is off by default at launch.

In the Moonshot AI announcement, the company describes K3.1 Pro as the first model in its K3.1 series, a 3T-class open-weight model with a 1 million-token context window. Moonshot also says full weights are planned for November 4, 2026.

Moonshot’s comparison table reports a 65.7% score on Terminal-Bench 4.0 for K3.1 Pro, ahead of GPT-6 Astra at 58.2% and just behind Claude Opus 5.5 at 66.4%. Those figures are useful directional data, but they come from the vendor’s own reporting.

The Kimi API guide says developers need a successful top-up of at least $1 to unlock the model, making first access a paid step rather than an instant free test.
