OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol at $2 per 1M, starts Dots rollout

Builders get a cheaper near-Astra model to test, but tool-using deployments may need Responses API migration work. Dots could reduce some agent plumbing later, though its rollout details are still based on independent reporting and appear tier-gated.

OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol at $2 per 1M, starts Dots rollout

OpenAI on September 29, 2026 added `gpt-6.1-sol` to its API and used its DevDay 2026 recap to begin the Dots rollout.

According to OpenAI’s model page, Sol costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with a 1,050,000-token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens. OpenAI positions it as a lower-cost model with near-Astra performance for complex coding, computer use, and professional work rather than as a flagship replacement.

There is also an integration caveat for existing teams: tool calling on Sol is supported through the Responses API, while Chat Completions support is limited to setups without tool calling. That makes Sol relevant for teams testing lower-cost long-context or multi-step workloads, but it is not a drop-in swap for every Chat Completions stack.

Separate independent reports say Dots are always-on agents powered by Astra, not Sol, and are rolling out first to Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, with Enterprise, education, and healthcare access via an admin-enabled beta.
